Along with introducing the Sony a6300, Sony disclosed its new project - new G Master (GM) intended for Alpha full-frame series of mirrorless cameras. The new line-up of lenses was introduced by launching three new lenses: Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM, and Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS. What is more, together with these lenses, this Japanese corporation also launched two teleconverters, Sony FE 1.4x and Sony FE 2.0x, which are to be combined with the new Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS.
With its new GM lenses, Sony laid stress on high resolution and high-quality bokeh. New FE-mount lenses are sealed and thus resistant to dust and moisture, and they are also all equipped with focus motors.
The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM is a standard zoom lens composed of 18 elements in 13 groups, one of which is completely new and very accurate, extreme aspherical (XA) element, and it is in charge of reducing chromatic aberrations and delivering the ultimate resolution - throughout the entire zoom range and aperture range, as well as from one corner to another of all image files. As for the other elements, one is ED (Extra-low-Dispersion), while one is Super ED. The diaphragm consists of 9 blades, whereas the front element is covered with the Nano AR coating, which suppresses reflections and brings exceptional contrast and clarity. The new FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM also boasts a SSM (Super Sonic Wave Motor) motor, which features a new set of algorithms that position the lens elements with great speed and accuracy. Moreover, the AF motor operates quietly and smoothly, which makes this lens ideal for shooting both stills and movies. As it has been said, the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM is sealed, while its filter diameter is 82mm.
As far as the new Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is concerned, this prime lens is specially designed for portraits. When it comes to its optical construction, this fixed lens is made of 11 elements in 8 groups, one of which is extreme aspherical (XA), like in the case of the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, one is ED, and one is Super ED. The front element of the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is also covered with the Nano AR coating, which is particularly important for portrait lenses, due to flare and ghosting reduction. The diaphragm of this prime lens consists of 11 blades, which is the most ever in an Alpha lens. Accurate focusing is accomplished also thanks to the SSM AF motor. This lens is sealed, too, and its filter diameter is 77mm.
The last in this series of new lenses, but definitely not the least, is the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS. With its very usable range and internal characteristics, this telephoto zoom lens has deservedly taken over the first place in Sony's class of telephoto lenses. As for the optics, the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS is equipped with as many as 32 elements in 18 groups, one of which is XA, one is ED, and one Super ED, while the front element of this lens is covered with the Nano AR coating as well. What needs to be stressed out as far as this lens is concerned is the fact that it features a floating focusing system, which is the first such case among Alpha zoom lenses, which results in a superb minimum focusing distance - only 0.96m. Furthermore, we have once again the SSM motor, but it is now accompanied by two linear motors, which operate together so that large lens elements would move quickly. Above all, the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS is the only among this trio of lenses that boasts image stabilization - Optical SteadyShot (OSS) - which brings crystal clear subjects at all focal lengths. The Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS is also characterized by sealed design, the diaphragm consists of 11 blades, whereas the diameter filter is 77mm. In order to achieve even better results, it can be combined with new teleconverters Sony FE 1.4x and Sony FE 2x.
The new G Master lenses Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM and Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM are already available to buy (for $2200 and $1800, respectively), while the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS will join them in May, along with the teleconverters Sony FE 1.4x and Sony FE 2x; the prices of the telephoto lens and teleconverters intended for it are yet to be announced.
