Although lately it has focused on its powerful MILC cameras (the superb Sony Alpha a7S II has been launched, as well as the compact Sony RX1R II, and firmware updates have been released for the Sony Alpha a7R II and Sony Alpha a7 II), Sony shows that it has not forgotten about its entry-level DSLRs. Thus, the Alpha series gets a new representative - Sony a68 SLT.
The Sony a68 SLT (ILCA-68) inherited a number of pro-style characteristics from the Sony a77 II. This DSLR from the Sony Alpha series features the A-mount and is compatible with Sony A lenses. It boasts a 79-point (15 cross-type) phase-detect AF module, whose name speaks for itself - 4D FOCUS. This autofocus system is very similar to the one in the said a77 II and as such it delivers astonishing AF performance in any shooting conditions – even in lighting as low as -2 EV, where most other cameras experience serious problems. This AF system delivers predictive tracking that locks faithfully onto fast-moving subjects, and thanks to the camera's 24MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor and Sony’s Translucent Mirror Technology, you can effortlessly track moving subjects at up to 8 fps continuous shooting (in Tele-Zoom Continuous Advance Priority AE).
The new a68 also sports a BIONZ X image processor that uses Detail Reproduction and Diffraction-reducing Technologies, as well as Area-specific Noise Reduction, which results in crystal clear and detailed shots every time. Moreover, sharp images and blur-free handheld shooting is provided by the built-in SteadyShot image stabilization, which operates at all focal lengths and with any compatible lens.
Videos captured by this DSLR are Full HD (1920 x 1080 at 60 fps), and they are offered in an efficient 50Mbps XAVC S format. The Translucent Mirror Technology enables exceptional AF performance with video footage as well.
Stills and videos are framed through both a 2.7" 460,800-dot tilting LCD screen, which tilts up to 135 degrees upwards or 55 degrees downwards, and a 1,440,000-dot OLED Tru-Finder EVF with 0.88x magnification.
On top of all, the Alpha a68 is equipped with two control dials and a Multi Interface Shoe, which supports a wide range of optional accessories, including flashes, lights, microphones and remote commanders.
The Sony a68 SLT will go on sale in Europe in March 2016, and it will be available kitted with the Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II lens for €700 (~$760), or body-only for €600 (~$650). When this DSLR will arrive to the US and what its price will be is still to be announced.
