After a real show at the beginning of the year by launching the compacts Panasonic DMC-ZS60 and Panasonic DMC-ZS100, as well as the lens Panasonic Leica DG 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3 ASPH, Panasonic presented the public with a MILC camera Panasonic DMC-GF8 and another MILC lens Panasonic G Vario 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH Power OIS.
The new Panasonic DMC-GF8 is in fact a replica of the predecessor Panasonic DMC-GF7, but with the emphasis on selfies. It is equipped with the same sensor, 16MP Four Thirds Live MOS, a Venus Engine processor, contrast-detection autofocus (23 AF points), Full HD video at 60 fps, 5.8 fps continuous shooting, Wi-Fi support, pop-up flash, but it now comes in the shades of brown, silver, pink, and orange.
As far as its screen is concerned, this area has seen improvements, so the new GF8 brings an articulating 3" 1,040,000-dot LCD touch screen that can tilt upward by 180 degrees - ideal for self-portraits, i.e. selfies.
In order for the portrait quality to be as high as possible, the mirrorless GF8 offers a series of useful options, such as Soft Skin mode, numerous Creative Control filters (Retro, Soft Focus, Expressive, High Key, Toy Effect, etc.), the Beauty Retouch option, which clears up skin texture, whitens teeth, and provides the face with some kind of subsequent, virtual, makeup. Owing to these benefits, the new Panasonic GF8 will be particularly attractive to the female portion of the population.
What is also important to point out when it comes to the new MILC camera GF8 is that it comes along with 100GB of storage on Google Drive for storing images and videos.
In addition to the new Panasonic GF8, Panasonic's family of MILC lenses gets another member. The Panasonic G Vario 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH Power OIS is a standard zoom lens that offers a range of 24-120mm (35mm camera equivalent), which will respond to all usual demands of the scene (from landscapes to portraits), and it also sports the Dual IS. As for the optical construction, it consists of 11 elements in 9 groups, three of which are aspherical and one is ED. Bearing in mind its sealed design, which makes it resistant to dust and moisture, this zoom lens is built for travel. The Panasonic 12-60mm also offers a stepper motor, which brings smooth and silent focus, both when shooting stills or movies. Thanks to this motor, this standard Panasonic lens supports the sensor drive at max. 240 fps, which makes it exceptional for capturing 4K videos. The number of its diaphragm blades is 7, while the filter diameter is 58mm.
When it comes to the availability and price of the new Panasonic DMC-GF8, as well as its kit combinations, these details are still to be announced. As for the Panasonic G Vario 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH Power OIS, it comes out in May, and its price will be $499.
