After a pause of several months since introducing the last addition to its collection (the announcement of the trio Leica M Edition 60, Leica D-Lux (Typ 109), and Leica X (Typ 113) last September, shortly before Photokina 2014), Leica announced a new version of the noted Leica M Monochrom, which is the first and only digital camera to deliver real black-and-white stills and films - Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) is on its way.
Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246), which in fact represents a monochrome version of the Leica M (Typ 240), is equipped with a 24MP full-frame CMOS sensor, which is a substantial upgrade in relation to the 18MP CCD sensor found on the predecessor; what is more, the new CMOS sensor features no color filter array, just as the CCD on the predecessor, so there is no loss of light by color filtering. Switching to the CMOS chip brings significant improvements. Namely, the ISO range has been increased to ISO 25,600 (in comparison to 10,000 in the Leica M Monochrom), which brings exceptionally sharp images; the video capabilities have been improved, and the M Monochrom (Typ 246) boasts Full HD 1080/25p; the Live View mode has been also enhanced, so it brings focus peaking, by which sharply focused edges in the image are highlighted by colored lines, as well as 10x magnification.
Thanks to the Leica Maestro processor and the superb 2GB-buffer memory, the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) functions three times faster than its predecessor, and the processor also enables extremely fast display of the captured images in the review mode. The review of images, as well as their capturing, is carried out via an excellent fixed 3" 921,000-dot TFT LCD screen, which features almost unbreakable sapphire crystal cover glass over it. There is also an optical viewfinder with 0.68x magnification at one's disposal.
Another advantage of the said CMOS sensor is that by means of an optional adapter almost all lenses of the Leica R series can be mounted on the body of the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246), which is made of durable magnesium alloy. However, there is no built-in flash on this MILC camera.
The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) will be available to buy during this month, and the price will be $7450.
