After a couple of months of pause in lens production (the last one was the Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR, together with the super MILC Fuji X-T10, in May), Fuji added yet another lens to its impressive X-series, Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR, and along with it also comes a Fujinon Teleconverter XF 1.4X TC WR.
The Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR is a prime lens that features a 35mm focal length (53mm in 35mm format equivalent) with the angle of view similar to that of the human eye (44.2°), and fast aperture - f/2. As for its optical construction, it boasts 9 elements in 6 groups, two of which are aspherical, and two of which are ED, and there is also a Nano-GI coating, which reduces ghosting and flare. This fixed lens also boasts very fast internal autofocus (0.08s), as well as a stepper motor, which delivers quiet, accurate, and fast autofocus. In comparison to the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R, it features smaller aperture, but its dimensions and weight are also smaller (170g in relation to the 187g, which is the weight of the older model). The new Fuji 35mm is also sealed (which is not the case with the older 35mm), with as many as eight seals on the barrel, which makes it resistant to rain, moisture, dust, but also to temperatures down to 14°F/-10°C. The lens's 9-blade aperture creates smooth and circular bokeh, while the minimum focus distance is 30cm. The Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR will be available in black and silver variants.
As far as the new Fujinon Teleconverter XF 1.4X TC WR is concerned, it can be currently combined only with the Fujinon XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR; however, thanks to a new firmware that is in preparation at the moment, this teleconverter will soon become compatible with the remaining Fuji X lenses, as well with future ones (such as the Fujinon XF 100-400mm, which was announced at the beginning of this year at the CP+ 2015, along with the said innovations). When it is mounted on the Fuji 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR, the new Fujinon XF 1.4X TC WR multiplies its focal length by 1.4x, thus resulting in 70-200mm equivalent. Although the aperture becomes one f-stop higher when the teleconverter is mounted, the Fujinon XF 1.4X TC WR features an excellent optical design, with a construction of 7 elements in 3 groups, in order to maintain the optical performance of the original lens. Just like the new 35mm f/2 lens, this teleconverter, too, is weather- and dust-resistant, and is able to operate at temperatures as low as 14°F/-10°C, so you can efficiently use it outdoors along with weather- and dust-resistant models, such as the Fuji X-T1 or the said telephoto lens.
Together with the new lens and teleconverter, Fujifilm will release new firmware for all Fujifilm X-series camera bodies, which will make them compatible with these innovations.
The Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR will arrive in November, and its price will be $399.95. The Fujinon Teleconverter XF 1.4X TC WR will hit the shops one month later and it will be somewhat more expensive - $449.95. As for the firmware update, it will be available to download from Fujifilm's official website on October 29, 2015.
