After launching the tiny but sturdy Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, Canon has announced another prime lens that has a bright future ahead of it - Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM.
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM is the second generation of this popular lens and it is the successor of the superb Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM. The innovation brought by this lens is revolutionary Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics (BR Optics), which is said to correct chromatic aberrations better than any other technology so far. This optical technology utilizes special organic material newly developed by Canon (not glass), which has unique anomalous dispersion characteristics, in order to bring chromatic aberration correction to a higher level, which will result in images of outstanding quality.
The Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics technology does exactly as its name suggests: it refracts shorter (blue) wavelengths of light, which current optics finds exceedingly difficult to converge to a single plane, which is the principal cause of longitudinal chromatic aberrations that manifests themselves as color fringing. When placed between convex and concave lens elements made from standard optical glass materials, the Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics delivers sharp images with outstanding contrast and color fidelity.
Aside from the BR Optics, the new Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM also sports 14 elements in 11 groups, 2 of which are aspherical, and one of which is Super UD. What is more, the front and rear lens surfaces feature a fluorine coating, which repels liquids and dust particles, which in turn makes the lens easier to clean. There are 9 diaphragm blades, the filter diameter is 72mm, while the USM focusing motor makes autofocus practically silent.
This new prime lens is more durable than the predecessor, but it is also considerably heavier - 760g, in comparison to 580g, which is the weight of the older iteration. As all Canon L-series lenses, the 35mm f/1.4L II USM is sealed, and thus resistant to dust and moisture, which makes it ideal for outdoor photography.
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM will hit the stores in October, priced at $1799.
