After a several-month-long pause (Canon's last activity was in October 2015), at the beginning of this year Canon refreshed its superzoom camera series by introducing Canon PowerShot SX540 HS and Canon PowerShot SX420 IS.
The Canon PowerShot SX540 HS took over its optical configuration from the predecessor Canon PowerShot SX530 HS, so it is equipped with the same lens, 24-1200mm f/3.4-6.5, which boasts 50x optical zoom and optical image stabilization, but it gained a new sensor, 20MP CMOS, a faster processor, DIGIC 6, and raised its Full HD video to 60 fps. What is also new with this superzoom camera is its 3" 461,000-dot LCD screen and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC. It does not feature a viewfinder, but there is pop-up flash at one's disposal.
Like the more advanced Canon PowerShot SX60 HS, the SX540 sports the Auto Zoom option, which is used to keep the subject in the frame as it moves towards or away from the camera, and there is also the Zoom Framing Assist option, by means of which the lens zooms out so that you can locate your subject and then zooms right back in. What is new is the Zoom Framing Assist Lock option, which uses the camera's image stabilization system so that the subject is kept in the center while the lens is at full telephoto.
As for the Canon PowerShot SX420 IS, it picks up where the Canon PowerShot SX410 IS left off, with the same sensor and processor - 20MP CCD and DIGIC 4+. However, the SX420 is equipped with a stronger lens in relation to the predecessor (24–1008mm f/3.5-6.6), so the optical zoom is now 42x, and it also features optical image stabilization. Generally, the SX420 is far weaker than the said SX540, but it sports the Auto Zoom option; however, it does not have either of the Assist features.
Videos are recorded in HD resolution at 25 fps via a 3" 230,000-dot LCD screen, and thanks to built-in Wi-Fi with NFC, images and HD videos are easily transferred to compatible devices. Like the SX540, the SX420 features no viewfinder, but it boasts built-in flash.
The Canon PowerShot SX540 HS will come out in March, priced at $399.99. The Canon PowerShot SX420 IS will hit the shops one month earlier, and its price will be $299.99. Aside from black, the SX420 will be available in red, too.
